The Rise of Criminal Fly-Tipping

Published: 14th February 2020

Fly-tipping is a serious problem businesses and private landowners face on a daily basis and the problem is now worse than ever before.

A recent report from the BBC has detailed the current problems landowners face with fly-tipping costing authorities over £60m in costs to clean-up since 2012. It is now more common than ever to see incidents of fly tipping, with a rise in organised criminal gangs being blamed for the larger fly-tipping incidents.

The report reveals that criminals are setting up fake waste management companies and hiring out commercial buildings in order to dump huge amounts of waste, leaving landowners no choice but to foot the bill for the clean-up of the illegally fly-tipped waste.

The BBC report also found that:

  • Large-scale fly-tipping – defined as tipper lorry load or more in size – has more than doubled in six years.
  • Last year, councils faced a £12.8m bill to clear more than 36,200 large tips.
  • That accounted for more than a fifth of the overall cost of clearing fly-tips.
  • Parts of London and Manchester have been the hardest hit

It is believed that the introduction of fees to many recycling centres across the country has lead to the rise of organised criminal fly-tipping, yet many local authorities are still under-resourced to deal with this sort of crime.

Local authorities were given the right to issue a £400 penalty to anyone passing waste to an unlicensed carrier in 2019, but the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs have said that waste crime is becoming harder to deal with as it is becoming more organised and is starting to be controlled by “networks of career criminals”.

How to keep your land safe from fly-tipping

Height Restriction BarriersHeight restriction barriers: the implementation of height restriction barriers to your business or land can be highly effective in helping to prevent fly-tipping by restricting larger vehicles from entering your premises.

As the majority of fly-tipping incidents are likely going to be conducted through the use of large vans, lorries or trucks, a height restriction barrier can prevent these vehicles from accessing an area and deter the would be fly-tipper.

Bollards: Having strong and robust security bollards in place can prevent vehicular access to common fly-tipping areas such as car parks or other areas of private land.

The benefit of security bollards is that they can be customised to be rising bollards which mean that authorised personnel can access the areas they want, whilst preventing fly-tippers from accessing your land or premises out of hours.

Swing arm barriers: swing arm barriers are a strong, robust security solution designed to prevent vehicular access to a certain area if necessary.

A strong, well maintained swing barrier can act as a strong deterrent for would be fly-tippers as it is clear they are unable to access a certain area and will often leave to attempt to tip elsewhere.
