Security Barrier Fails – Where not to install your Security Barriers!

Published: 18th September 2019

Ensuring the security of your commercial premises is essential. Not only does it stop trespassers getting on to your site but additional security will keep staff and tools protected.

There are times however, when security barriers can become an expensive nuisance or humorous feature in some business premises, especially when they’ve been installed in the wrong area.

Security Barrier on High Platform

Unless you have a car transporter sat on the back of an arctic, anything could drive under this barrier pole!

What Type of Security Barrier Do You Need?

Before you even pick up the phone, you need to think about what you want. If you’re unsure at this point which product is most suitable, ask yourself these questions.

What part of your premises do you consider the entrance point?

If you have a private car park that employees enter through a main road or fairly busy street, you may want to consider a security barrier, road blocker or even bollards which can keep the entrance closed off to unauthorised personnel but allow those with access to enter.

Does your premise have a height restriction?

If the answer is yes, then naturally you will be requiring a Height Restriction Barrier. These are ideal for only letting cars and vans on-site.

Of course if you regularly have large trucks or lorries that delivery goods to your business, having an additional entrance away from the normal pedestrian entrance may be a suitable option.

Is your site accessible by the public?

Schools and Educational premises for example, see students, parents and children access school grounds daily and so naturally safety should be a priority. Sliding security gates and even pedestrian turnstiles can prove to be an effective security method.

Where to Avoid Installing Your Security Barrier

It may sound like an obvious question but sometimes things can go amiss and so it’s always best to double check the area before going ahead with the installing.

Exits

If you have one area that acts as an entrance and an exit then you may require security gates or barriers that are supervised by access control systems or a security guard, who can manually allow people to exit the premises – especially if there is an emergency.

Installing a security gate that restricts staff or visitors from leaving the area with ease will only cause distress and time wasting.

In front of Safety Signs

Regardless of whether it’s a stop sign, speed limit or even height restriction sign, ensuring your Rising Arm Barrier or Security Gate isn’t in the way and restricting the sight of these signs can help to prevent accidents and potentially expensive repairs.

It doesn’t happen often, in fact rarely.
Every now and then you get one client / site that doesn’t prepare for his new barrier installation.

Near or Over Pedestrian Walkways

If the entrance to your premises includes a pathway to the site, ensuring this stays clear will avoid potential accidents. As some gates and barriers can be fairly low to the ground, the last thing anyone wants is for staff and visitors to have to climb their way past a barrier or gate.

If your chosen space has suitable room for it, adding a pedestrian gate alongside a security barrier or gate can help to solve this issue and make it clear that it’s an entry way for staff and visitors – of course, keeping enough space between a pathway and road is essential by law.

On Unsuitable Ground

Here at Newgate, we’ve seen it all, including the unfortunate circumstance of rising arm barriers sinking due to unstable grounds.

Make sure the location you want your product installed can stand strong for years to come and that the ground underneath won’t decide to take your security barrier with it.

Security Barrier on Unstable Ground

As you can see the barrier seems to be the victim of deadly quicksand!
Another couple of days and this barrier will cease to exist.

Why is this important?

You want to ensure the safety of your employees, not endanger them. That’s why not only is it important you pick the right products for your site but It’s even more important that they are positioned in the correct place too.

Making sure that your security barriers are maintained and secure can help to avoid any accidents should there be strong winds or your premises is the victim of vandalism or forced entry.
